Causes of Acne
When acne occurs after the age of 18, this is considered as adult acne. Adult acne can persists up to fifties. Adult acne is more common among women than men. There are various causes of adult acne. Hormonal changes, for once, can cause acne. This happens during menstruation and pregnancy. Women who are taking birth control pills can also be affected by acne.
Too much stress can also cause acne. The sebaceous glands tend to produce excessive oil when a person is under too much stress. Cosmetics can also be responsible for acne breakouts. Acne can also be caused by the body's difficulty of removing dead skin cells. This can be due to the climate or other external factors. Acne can also be caused by medications like anti-psychotics or antidepressants. Allergies to some medications can also trigger acne breakout.
Questions have been raised with regard to diet as a possible cause of acne. Therefore, if you notice that you have breakouts with certain food, it is best that you avoid that food.
Adult Acne : Understanding and Preventing
Acne is a common skin disorder. It is so common that almost everyone has experienced being plagued with pimples, whiteheads and blackheads. It is most likely to affect teenagers as their hormones change along with their bodies. Acne occurs when the sebaceous glands overproduce sebum. This causes the skin to clog so the oils are stuck inside the skin. The bacteria, Propionibacterium acnes, feed on this oil which eventually leads into infection and the development of pimples. Acne is common among teenagers but it can persist up to adulthood and this is known as adult acne.

Preventing Adult Acne
Adult Acne can be treated. However, treatment of adult acne can be avoided if you prevent the occurrence of acne in the first place. Here are some tips on how to avoid adult acne: a. Avoid using makeup. If you cannot avoid it, make sure that you use it sparingly and do take it off before you go to bed. Also buy makeup's that are hypoallergenic. b. Resist the urge to prick or pop any blemish or pimple on your face. This may spread the bacteria. c. Wash your face at least twice a day with a well acknowledged acne wash. Washing cleanses off the dirt and grime preventing pore clogging. d. Wash your pillowcase and face towels regularly. They can harbor germs that can cause acne or aggravate your condition. e. Get enough rest and sleep. f. Eat a healthy diet. g. Drink a lot of water.
Sounds pretty easy really, doesn't it? In theory it is and so we are left with the question. Why do we still see so many people dealing with this problem of Acne? Real simple to me. Moral support for all those trying to get rid of Acne

Entering into Combat with Adult Acne
If you feel as strongly about acne as I do, you probably don't want to sit around moping while those unsightly blackheads and whiteheads take control of your body. Don't allow your acne to bring you down without a good fight. There are some people out there that are very fortunate to only suffer from the occasional outbreak, having an identifiable trigger to base their treatment on. Many adults are able to avoid acne by steering clear of foods that contain unhealthy oils, but many more seem to get acne regardless of how cautious they are with their daily regimens.
Diet plays an important part in our ability to keep the production of sebum by the sebaceous glands under control. If our bodies are caught in a chokehold by harmful toxins, it becomes very difficult to break the nasty acne cycle. There are many ways you can cleanse your system of those toxins. The easiest way is to drink lots of water everyday in order to flush toxins out and prevent them from building up and really doing damage. The amount of water really depends on your body type and size but 2 liters per day is a good average for most. Also, eat the recommended number of fruits and vegetables with every meal, concentrating on ones that are high in vitamins (for healthier skin) and high in fiber (to promote good digestion). And whatever you do, substitute those greasy fries for something that your body will thank you for, like a salad or soup.
Makeup and face creams do seem to be part of adult lifestyles nowadays. Some people really enjoy the bright, fresh look that a bit of makeup brings to their face. While a lot of women have no trouble avoiding pore-clogging foundation and eye shadows, the rest shouldn't be punished for their interest in cosmetics. So if you are keen on makeup, you can still continue to use it provided that you choose natural brands or mixtures that won't clog your pores and promote oil production. There are a lot of acne conscious brands out there that will cater to your skin type and cut down on the sebum but you might need to make an effort to compare products to see which one will suit you best.
When it comes to face creams, both men and women have separate lines in the cosmetics department that targets them for their specific concerns. Face creams can be good for our skin if we choose ones that work with our skin type and not against it. Again, avoid the oily pore-clogging brands and stick with ones that are light and natural. Know your skin type and prevent your skin from becoming too dry as well as too oily. Dry skin becomes irritated easily and can aggravate acne just as well as oily skin can.
Exercise is crucial for keeping our hormones under control and therefore managing stress levels. As adults, we encounter stressful situations on a daily basis and need to exercise regularly to keep our stress levels down and our minds clear. By staying physically fit, we are also keeping our bodies in prime condition, ready to fight off illnesses and remove toxins. Exercising also regulates our digestion and keeps everything working smoothly. Our bodies are much like computers. Just think of how awful your computer would function if you didn't regularly scan it for viruses, defragment it, and keep the hard drive clear of nonessential junk by emptying the recycle bin!
So keep all these factors in mind in your fight with adult acne. Don't sell yourself out short by giving up on one area when you've already succeeded in another. See it through to the end by following all these tips until you've worked yourself into a healthy routine of maintaining a good diet, staying informed and making wise choices in the cosmetics department, and exercising regularly. You'll both feel and look better after all the hard work!

I suffered from acne, since the age of 11. My problem was a consequence to my monthly cycle and the breakouts occur the week before starting my cycle.
The increased level of sebum secretion was related to hormonal changes during the cycle, perhaps a rise in testosterone at midcycle. In my specific condition only a endocrinologist with special expertise in female hormone problems is been successful with Diane-35, a drug used to treat severe, stubborn acne.
I'm 47 yeas old, and I'm plagued with acne problems. But mine is due to food allergy that cannot be avoided-unless of course if I want never eat again!
the only thing that seems to help me keep it under control is washing my face, and at bedtime I use a acne cream, and in the morning I use hyrocotozone. If I keep on the acne cream, then my face dries out and cracks.
It''s not fun living iwth acne as an adult-let alone a teenager!
Nice Hub!
I find this a good reference hub for people interested in what acne is, what causes it, and what can be done about it. It is presented like a short reference article, and the information here is straightforwardly presented, with a magazine-like chattyness. Good hub.
It can be embarrassing for grown up people to deal with acne. For women, I find that often after they got pregnant for the first time, they never have acne again. Contraception sometimes helps too.
It is hard to deal with acne. Junk food does cause acne to worsen and I had learned the lesson the hard way. Right now I eat a lot more natural food like vegetables, seeds, nuts and fruits and my acne reduced drastically. I am right now following a great diet that actually creates an environment in the body that acne can't strive in. I am loving the results and prevention is always better than cure.

Joseph
I have suffered with adult acne which was completely non related to skincare and diet etc - it was hormonal - i think this is the hardest to deal with, when you are not in control of your own body. I have written about my experiences on my hub and would love to hear your comments! x
